Abstract:
Improved biomarkers are needed for infection diagnosis, reducing sepsis risk and guiding antibiotic therapy. Intensive Care Infection Score (ICIS) reflects the early innate immune response to infection, independent of systemic inflammation. Three cases were selected where ICIS was evaluated retrospectively, highlighting the potential of ICIS in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS): (1) ICIS suggested a possible secondary infection, (2) it portends a poor initial response to antibiotics, prompting the need for a change in therapy, and (3) it implies a noninfectious condition, thereby potentially avoiding unnecessary antibiotics. This case series underscores the potential of ICIS for clinical application, particularly in supporting AMS.

HAIs significantly increase the cost of health care. Extended stays in healthcare institutions, increased disability, increased costs of medications, including specialized antibiotics, and prolonged recovery times add to the patient's expenses and the healthcare institution and funding bodies.
