Abstract:
Digital technology adoption constitutes a crucial foundation for achieving green and low-carbon development. Although existing research has shed light on the link between digital technology adoption and corporate carbon performance from a static perspective, the conclusions remain mixed, and the direction and consequences of the evolution of resources brought together by digital technology adoption are still only marginally understood. Drawing upon dynamic capabilities theory, this study conducts an empirical analysis to investigate the influence mechanism of digital technology adoption on corporate carbon performance. Data are collected from Chinese A-share listed enterprises. The time frame covers 2010 to 2022. The results indicate that: (1) Both the breadth and depth of digital technology adoption markedly enhance corporate carbon performance. (2) Digital technology adoption is conducive to shaping adaptive, absorptive, and innovative capabilities, thereby enhancing carbon performance. (3) Organizational inertia weakens the elevating effects of digital technology adoption on absorptive and innovative capabilities. (4) The positive influence of digital technology adoption on carbon performance is particularly evident in manufacturing, non-high-carbon industries, and non-state-owned enterprises. (5) Organizational inertia markedly inhibits the linking of digital technology adoption and adaptive capability in the central and western areas. These findings provide guidance for optimizing enterprises' deployment strategies of digital technology and improving carbon performance.
