Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Background:

  • Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare, heterogeneous cancers with no established follow-up consensus.
  • Recurrence remains a challenge despite optimal multimodality treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze recurrence patterns in adult soft tissue sarcomas.
  • Identify predictive factors for local recurrence (LR) and systemic recurrence (SR).
  • Inform individualized follow-up protocols and interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of an adult soft tissue sarcoma database (1993-2020).
  • Inclusion of patients undergoing curative surgery.
  • Study of recurrence timing and location in relation to patient and tumor characteristics.

Main Results:

  • 31% of 984 patients experienced recurrence (12% LR, 19% SR) within a median follow-up of 37 months.
  • Distinct patterns observed: early LR in retroperitoneum, late LR in trunk; early SR in extremities, late SR in head & neck.
  • Predictors for LR included age >50 and extremity site; for SR included male sex, high grade, and adjuvant chemotherapy.

Conclusions:

  • Recurrence patterns in soft tissue sarcomas differ based on anatomical site and time.
  • Synovial sarcoma is linked to SR, liposarcoma to LR.
  • Findings support personalized follow-up strategies and timely interventions for soft tissue sarcoma recurrence.
