The Growing Potential of Thermal Ablation for Colorectal Liver Metastases

The COLLISION Phase III randomized controlled trial and several propensity-score matching studies have demonstrated that thermal ablation is the standard procedure for patients with small (< 30 mm) and few colorectal liver metastases. Thermal ablation reduces treatment costs, morbidity, and hospitalization while maintaining long-term outcomes. Combination use of thermal ablation during liver resection, and thermal ablation for small recurrent colorectal liver metastases does not compromise outcomes. Thermal ablation should be actively incorporated into the treatment strategy.
