Janus particles with variable anisotropic morphology are fabricated by swelling core-shell polystyrene@silica (PS@SiO2) particles with tunable shell thickness using toluene. It is found that the matched resistance to deformation between the core and the shell can be employed to regulate the shape and microstructure of Janus particles. The morphological evolution of the as-formed particles is finely controlled by adjusting the thickness and core crosslinking degree to achieve snowman-shaped and novel pistachio-shaped Janus particles. Interestingly, the adaptive pistachio-shaped Janus particles, as solid surfactants, can adaptively stabilize the changing oil-water interface by adjusting their own structure. Therefore, Janus colloidosome with an oriented organic-inorganic hybrid shell is synthesized by interfacial polymerization. This synthetic approach enriches the morphology and preparation method for Janus matter.
