Overview
Transcription is the process of synthesizing RNA from a DNA sequence by RNA polymerase. It is the first step in producing a protein from a gene sequence. Additionally, many other proteins and regulatory sequences are involved in the proper synthesis of messenger RNA (mRNA). Regulation of transcription is responsible for the differentiation of all the different types of cells and often for the proper cellular response to environmental signals.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Health Professions Education

Background:

  • Medical students rely on didactic lectures, often delivered via video with transcripts.
  • Transcript accuracy is crucial for educational equity and accessibility, yet data on errors is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess medical student usage of lecture transcripts and their perceptions of transcript accuracy.
  • To quantify transcript errors in preclinical medical lectures and compare them to industry standards.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of first-year preclinical medical students assessed transcript usage and error perception.
  • Lecture transcripts were audited for accuracy.
  • Quantitative survey data were analyzed using univariate statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using inductive coding. Two-sample t-tests compared error rates.

Main Results:

  • 94% of students used transcripts, 96% noticed errors, and 59% reported negative learning impacts.
  • Transcript accuracy fell below 99% in 35% of clinical science lectures and 5% of basic science lectures.
  • Significant discrepancies exist between student reliance on transcripts and their accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Inaccurate lecture transcripts negatively affect medical student learning and satisfaction.
  • Current transcript accuracy in medical education does not meet established industry standards.
  • Further research is needed to address transcript accuracy gaps in medical video lectures.
