Insights
Community resources are concentrated in high pediatric trauma areas but show limited effectiveness in injury reduction. Improving access and awareness of these resources is crucial for targeted trauma prevention initiatives.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Trauma Research
- Public Health
- Injury Prevention
Background:
- Traumatic injury is a leading cause of death in children.
- Understanding factors influencing pediatric trauma and recidivism is essential for prevention.
- The association between community resources and pediatric trauma outcomes requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the association between community resources and pediatric trauma.
- To examine the relationship between community resources and penetrating injuries and trauma recidivism.
- To identify potential areas for improving trauma prevention strategies.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of pediatric trauma patients (0-28 years) from January 2008 to April 2023 at a Level 1 pediatric trauma center.
- Comparison of recidivists (multiple trauma visits) with nonrecidivists.
- Analysis of community resources in high-trauma zip codes using the Community Resources and Assets Forsyth County map.
- Calculation of pairwise Pearson correlation coefficients to determine relationships between variables.
Main Results:
- A moderately strong positive correlation (r=0.5668) was found between community resources and recidivism.
- Very strong positive correlations were observed between community resources and penetrating trauma (r=0.9118) and child abuse injuries (r=0.9448).
- Among children under 16, a strong correlation (r=0.7466) existed between resources and penetrating trauma.
Conclusions:
- Community resources are geographically concentrated in areas with high pediatric trauma rates.
- The effectiveness of existing community resources in reducing pediatric injuries appears limited, potentially due to access or awareness issues.
- Targeted initiatives are needed to enhance the accessibility and utilization of community resources in high-need areas for effective trauma prevention.
Abstract:
IntroductionTraumatic injury is the leading cause of death among children. While factors associated with pediatric trauma and trauma recidivism are known, efforts to prevent injury continue. This study aimed to assess the association between community resources and pediatric trauma, including penetrating injuries and recidivism.MethodsA retrospective review was conducted at a Level 1 pediatric trauma center of patients aged 0-28 years with traumatic injuries from January 2008 to April 2023. Recidivists, defined as patients with multiple trauma visits, were compared to nonrecidivists. The top 6 zip codes with the highest trauma rates were analyzed for community resources using the Community Resources and Assets Forsyth County map. Pairwise Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to assess relationships between community resources, recidivism, penetrating trauma, and child abuse injuries.ResultsAmong 3004 patients from the top 5 zip codes, 8.6% were recidivists (n = 258). Penetrating trauma comprised 31% of injuries (n = 938). A moderately strong positive correlation was found between community resources and recidivism (r = 0.5668), while very strong positive correlations were observed for community resources with penetrating trauma (r = 0.9118) and child abuse (r = 0.9448). Among children under 16, the correlation between resources and penetrating trauma was strong (r = 0.7466).ConclusionsCommunity resources are concentrated in areas of high pediatric trauma, yet their effectiveness in reducing injuries appears limited, likely due to poor access or awareness. These findings highlight the need to improve access and utilization of resources in high-need areas through targeted trauma prevention initiatives.

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
