[Medically induced death in the European Union and Switzerland : Differences and similarities, ethical issues]

À draft law on 'support for the sick and the end of life' was presented in 2024 in France and debated by the deputies at first reading. The first part concerned 'supportive care and the patients' rights', while the second concerned "active assistance in dying'. With the dissolution of the National Assembly in June 2024, discussion of the proposed law has been suspended. In this summary, we review the development of the legislation governing palliative care in France, from the Laroque circular in 1986 to the Claeys-Léonetti law currently in force. Secondly, we develop the legislation and texts of the various countries of the European Union concerning the end of life, definitions and significant points that differentiate them, as well as the evolution of requests in these countries. Finally we present some ethical concerns.
