Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Tonsilloliths on panoramic radiographs (PRs) are often misdiagnosed.
  • Misdiagnosis leads to unnecessary procedures, patient risk, and increased healthcare costs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate AI models for accurate and rapid tonsillolith detection.
  • To provide diagnostic support and improve patient safety.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a dataset of 275 PRs (150 with tonsilloliths, 125 without).
  • Assessed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models including ResNet and EfficientNet.
  • Evaluated model performance using accuracy, recall, precision, and F1 score.

Main Results:

  • ResNet18 and EfficientNetB0 achieved 89% average accuracy in differentiating tonsillolith presence.
  • EfficientNetB0 demonstrated 93% precision, 87% recall, and 90% F1 score.
  • ResNet101 showed lower performance compared to other models.

Conclusions:

  • AI-powered deep learning models can significantly enhance clinical diagnosis of tonsilloliths.
  • Implementing AI improves diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in radiology.
  • This technology addresses a clinical need for reliable tonsillolith identification.
