Preliminary Results of a Multimodal Bidirectional Armband for Sensing and Feedback
Abstract:
This work presents a multimodal bidirectional armband that innovatively integrates sensing and feedback modules in an ergonomic, non-invasive design to enhance prosthetic functionalities. The armband is capable to deliver modality-matched force feedback while ensuring optimal skin adherence for electromyographic sensors, without interference. We performed a device characterization and evaluated its efficacy in improving users' ability to perceive object grasp while using the Hannes prosthetic hand. Moreover, we conducted an assessment to ensure the absence of interference between the feedback mechanism and the electromyographic acquisition system. Positive preliminary results demonstrate the armband's versatile design potential to fit into volume-adjustable sockets or in osteointegrated limb different subjects, enhancing prosthetic control and user experience, therefore providing a promising step toward advanced human-machine interaction.
