Teeth01:15

Teeth

708
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Tooth Anatomy

1.0K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

416
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Summary

Posterior edentulism, especially bilateral, is linked to temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Complete denture wearers also show higher TMD prevalence, underscoring the need for timely dental rehabilitation to reduce symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Science
  • Oral Health
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

Background:

  • Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of conditions affecting the jaw joint and muscles.
  • Posterior edentulism, the loss of back teeth, is a common dental issue.
  • The relationship between edentulism and TMDs requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the association between posterior edentulism and TMD symptoms.
  • To compare TMD prevalence in unilateral versus bilateral posterior edentulism.
  • To evaluate TMD symptoms in patients with and without dentures.

Main Methods:

  • 100 participants aged 35-70 with posterior edentulism were studied.
  • The Helkimo Index was used to assess TMD.
  • Participants were divided into groups based on tooth loss (unilateral/bilateral) and denture status.

Main Results:

  • Bilateral edentulism correlated with higher incidences of clicking, jaw rigidity, fatigue, limited opening, TMJ pain, and luxation.
  • Complete denture wearers reported more clicking, fatigue, limited opening, and luxation than non-denture wearers.
  • Non-denture wearers experienced higher TMJ pain; partial denture users had minimal symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Posterior edentulism is significantly associated with increased TMD symptoms.
  • Bilateral edentulism and complete denture use are linked to higher TMD prevalence.
  • Timely dental rehabilitation is crucial for mitigating TMD risk and improving oral health.
