  • To review and categorize qualitative and quantitative descriptors used in rhinoplasty.

  • To highlight gaps in current rhinoplasty descriptive practices.

Main Methods:

  • A scoping review following PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
  • Searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Ovid/MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases.
  • Extracted and categorized qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative measures from 459 studies (1949-2021).

Main Results:

  • Quantitative descriptions (57%) were more common than qualitative (23.5%) or semi-quantitative (16%).
  • Nasal tip (20.8%), dorsum (13.2%), and alar base (12.3%) were most frequently described.
  • Photography (60%) was the primary measurement technique, followed by surgeon assessment (20.3%) and 3D imaging (5.4%).

Conclusions:

  • A significant gap exists between qualitative rhinoplasty descriptors and objective quantitative analysis.
  • Standardization of terminology is needed for improved clinical communication.
  • Integration of objective measurement tools can enhance surgical planning in rhinoplasty.
