Abstract:
Burnout syndrome is an occupational hazard characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Although it initially arises in the workplace setting, it can spill over and affect all aspects of an individual's life. The high prevalence of physician burnout represents a public health crisis for healthcare systems already under strain. In France, it is estimated that 62% of physicians have experienced an episode of burnout. The consequences of burnout are multiple: deterioration of individual health, decreased productivity, risk of professional disengagement or reduced quality of care. It is also a significant financial burden for healthcare systems. In this literature review, we aim to describe the extent of burnout among ophthalmologists. We explore the various dimensions of occupational burnout using a structured analytical framework. The multiple studies analyzed indicate that ophthalmologists are not spared from the burnout epidemic and highlight the paucity of data on burnout in this specialty. Despite significant methodological heterogeneity, these studies identify both internal and external factors associated with the emergence of burnout and suggest potential strategies for mitigation. This review encourages institutions to implement prevention, screening, and support programs to optimize ophthalmologists' workplace well-being, enhance the quality of care provided, and address both current and future challenges in the field.
