Abstract:
Neuropathic pain is a complex, chronic condition with significant socioeconomic impact. Understanding its mechanisms is essential for effective, personalized treatment. Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST), particularly the DFNS protocol, helps identify sensory phenotypes within the same diagnosis, supporting a mechanism-based classification. Although effective, DFNS QST is resource-intensive, limiting its clinical use. Simplified bedside protocols may offer broader accessibility. This review outlines diagnostic strategies for neuropathic pain and examines four sensory phenotypes, linking them to underlying peripheral and central mechanisms.
