Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

456
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.2K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.5K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

3.6K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Summary

A new scale, the Occupational Therapy Acute Care Self-Efficacy Scale (OTACSES), reliably measures occupational therapy students' confidence in acute care settings. This tool demonstrates strong internal consistency and test-retest reliability for assessing student abilities and knowledge.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Therapy Education
  • Healthcare Professional Training
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Occupational therapy (OT) practice in acute care demands specialized skills for complex patient populations.
  • A standardized tool to measure OT students' self-efficacy in acute care settings is currently lacking.
  • Self-efficacy is crucial for effective occupational therapy service delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Occupational Therapy Acute Care Self-Efficacy Scale (OTACSES).
  • To assess the test-retest reliability and precision of the OTACSES in first-year OT students.
  • To establish preliminary benchmarks for clinically meaningful change in self-efficacy scores.

Main Methods:

  • Scale items were developed using literature review, expert interviews, and student input.
  • The OTACSES was administered to 47 OT students, followed by item reduction.
  • The scale was re-administered after a one-week control period to assess test-retest reliability and precision.

Main Results:

  • The finalized "knowledge" and "abilities" subscales exhibited excellent internal consistency.
  • The OTACSES demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability and acceptable precision for total and subscale scores.
  • Preliminary data suggest meaningful changes of 5, 3, and 7 points for abilities, knowledge, and total scores, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • The OTACSES is a reliable and precise instrument for evaluating occupational therapy students' self-efficacy in acute care.
  • The scale provides a foundation for future research on acute care OT education outcomes.
  • Further investigation is warranted to explore its use with practitioners and as an educational outcome measure.
