Abstract:
Interdisciplinary medical-engineering research is driving transformative advances in anesthesia by introducing technologies that enhance safety, precision, and personalization in perioperative care. This mini-review examines key developments-ranging from novel airway devices and advanced monitoring systems to artificial intelligence-driven predictive analytics, virtual and augmented reality training platforms, and robotic delivery systems-that collectively enable more customized anesthesia protocols and reduce human error. As these innovations mature, they promise to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. However, their implementation demands rigorous technology standardization, clinical validation, ethical and regulatory oversight, data privacy safeguards, cost-effectiveness assessment, and specialized training. It is imperative that sustained collaboration occurs among anesthetists, biomedical engineers, and data scientists so that these advances can be translated into equitable, patient-centric practices. The integration of medicine and engineering has led to significant advancements in the field of anesthesia, positioning it for further evolution into an intelligent, interconnected discipline. The present review outlines current trends, anticipates future directions, and identifies potential barriers, offering a concise roadmap to guide ongoing research and implementation in advancing perioperative management.
