Abstract:
Cranial ultrasound (US) is a multifaceted tool that offers unique capabilities for the practical assessment of a range of neonatal and early childhood intracranial disorders. It provides anatomic structural information as well as characterization of intravascular flow patterns important for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment decisions. In this article, up-to-date and current clinical applications of cranial US for the evaluation of underlying congenital, hemorrhagic, infectious, traumatic and vascular disorders are reviewed. In addition, the use of contrast agents to assess perfusion abnormalities is highlighted.
