Anesthesia Comparison of Analgesic Efficacy of TAP and QLB Blocks After Open Radical Retropubic Prostatectomy

Background:
Open retropubic radical prostatectomy (ORP) causes moderate pain in the early postoperative period. Uncontrolled postoperative pain may delay recovery and prolong hospital stay. This study compares the effects of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block versus posterior quadratus lumborum (QLB) block on postoperative opioid use within 24 h after ORP.
Materials And Methods:
In this randomized controlled trial, patients undergoing ORP under general anesthesia were assigned to receive either a TAP block or a posterior QLB with 20 mL of 0.375% bupivacaine bilaterally. All patients received multimodal analgesia. Postoperative opioid consumption, pain scores, and complications were recorded.
Results:
Sixty-two patients were analyzed. Median opioid consumption at 24 h was 100 mg in the TAP group and 150 mg in the QLB group (P = 0.277). Pain scores and satisfaction levels were comparable between groups. No major complications were observed.
Conclusion:
Both TAP and QLB blocks provided effective analgesia after ORP. There was no significant difference in 24-h opioid consumption.
