This meta-analysis reveals that feeling significant to others (mattering) is linked to fewer depressive symptoms, while feeling insignificant (anti-mattering) is linked to more. These findings highlight the importance of social connection for mental well-being.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Mental Health Research
Background:
- Mattering, the sense of being significant to others, and anti-mattering, feelings of insignificance, are increasingly studied in relation to psychological well-being.
- Both constructs have been associated with mental health outcomes, particularly depressive symptoms.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a meta-analysis examining the association between depressive symptoms and general mattering.
- To investigate the relationship between depressive symptoms and anti-mattering.
Main Methods:
- A systematic literature search was conducted using keywords related to general mattering/anti-mattering and depressive symptoms.
- Meta-analysis was performed on 39 independent samples, adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
Main Results:
- A significant negative correlation was found between general mattering and depressive symptoms (Fisher's Z = -0.41).
- A significant positive association was observed between anti-mattering and depressive symptoms (Fisher's Z = 0.67).
- Anti-mattering showed a stronger positive association with depressive symptoms than general mattering did with depressive symptoms.
Conclusions:
- The study provides robust evidence for the significant relationship between mattering, anti-mattering, and depressive symptoms.
- Findings have implications for clinical interventions and future research in mental health.
