A new green-emitting phosphor, CeZnAl11O19:Mn2+, was developed for LED backlighting. It shows excellent thermal stability and a wide color gamut, making it ideal for advanced display technologies.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Solid-State Chemistry
- Luminescence
Background:
- Magnetoplumbite-type materials are explored for phosphorescent applications.
- Luminescent properties are sensitive to doping and crystal structure modifications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize a novel narrow-band green-emitting phosphor.
- To investigate the luminescence properties and thermal stability of CeZnAl11O19:Mn2+.
- To evaluate its potential for white LED applications.
Main Methods:
- Solid-state synthesis of CeZnAl11O19:Mn2+ by substituting LaMgAl11O19.
- Photoluminescence spectroscopy to analyze emission spectra and quantum efficiencies.
- Thermal quenching measurements and temperature-dependent full width at half maximum (fwhm) analysis.
Main Results:
- Optimized CeZn0.65Al11O19:0.35Mn2+ exhibits green emission peaking at 517 nm with a narrow fwhm of 30 nm.
- Achieved internal/external quantum efficiencies of 75%/19% and low thermal quenching (29% reduction at 473 K).
- Demonstrated weak electron-phonon coupling (S=0.74, phonon energy=62.8 meV), minimizing thermal broadening.
Conclusions:
- CeZnAl11O19:Mn2+ is a promising narrow-band green-emitting phosphor with excellent thermal stability.
- The developed phosphor enables white LED devices with high luminous efficiency (~50 lm/W) and a wide color gamut (117% NTSC).
- This material is well-suited for wide color gamut white LED backlighting applications.
