A rare fungal infection, Candida glabrata chorioamnionitis, occurred in a twin pregnancy conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF). Early diagnosis and antifungal treatment were crucial for maternal survival.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Infectious Diseases
- Reproductive Medicine
Background:
- Fungal chorioamnionitis is a rare pregnancy complication.
- Candida glabrata is an opportunistic fungal pathogen.
- Assisted reproductive technologies, like IVF, may increase infection risk.
Observation:
- A severe case of Candida glabrata chorioamnionitis occurred in a 19-week twin pregnancy conceived via IVF.
- The patient experienced maternal septic shock and fetal demise.
- Candida glabrata was identified in blood and placental cultures.
Findings:
- The patient was successfully treated with anidulafungin.
- Early identification of C. glabrata was key to treatment.
- The case underscores the link between IVF and fungal chorioamnionitis.
Implications:
- Increased awareness of fungal chorioamnionitis in IVF pregnancies is needed.
- Early diagnosis and prompt management are critical.
- Consideration for pre-procedural screening and prophylaxis in high-risk IVF patients may be warranted.
