A two-pot, three-step synthesis of twisted dibenzocarbazoles (CBZs) with exceptional reduction potentials has been developed. The key step in this approach involves the construction of indole derivative followed by a PTSA·H2O-catalyzed annulation between the indole derivative and 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds to afford the twisted carbazole framework. This method provides a rapid and efficient route to a wide variety of twisted carbazoles in good to excellent yields. Furthermore, its application in photocatalysis was investigated.

Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
