    Summary

Personality traits influence how individuals respond during hearing tests. Anxious males struggled with speech audiometry, highlighting potential gender differences in audiological assessments.

    Area of Science:

    • Audiology
    • Psychology
    • Hearing Science

    Background:

    • Personality factors may influence audiological assessment outcomes in individuals with normal hearing or hearing loss.
    • Previous research indicates a potential link between personality traits and responses in hearing evaluations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between personality dimensions and responses in audiological tests.
    • To examine these relationships separately for males and females, and for audiometrically naive versus sophisticated participants.

    Main Methods:

    • Participants included 30 adults (15 naive, 15 sophisticated) with experimentally simulated hearing loss.
    • The Eysenck Personality Inventory was administered to assess personality dimensions.
    • Audiometric tests were used to evaluate hearing responses.

    Main Results:

    • More anxious males showed a reduced ability to match pure-tone hearing loss with speech hearing loss.
    • A correlation between extraversion and accurate speech responses on retest was observed in sophisticated subjects.
    • No significant trends were found in other analyses.

    Conclusions:

    • Anxiety in males may impact their performance on specific audiological tasks, suggesting a need to explore gender-based response differences.
    • Personality traits, such as extraversion, might influence test-retest reliability in sophisticated participants.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the interplay of personality, gender, and hearing assessment outcomes.
