Enhancing in vivo morphological assessment of skin conditions using a four-state polarized multispectral imaging
Abstract:
Polarized multispectral imaging (PMSI) enhances the depth and contrast resolution of subsurface skin architecture with minimal specular reflection. Existing PMSI systems are expensive, contain many mechanical parts, and require more developmental and maintenance efforts. Utilizing recent advancements in high-speed polarized cameras, we developed a novel, to the best of our knowledge, low-cost PMSI system at the sensor level using efficient mechanical calibration for real-time capture of skin reflectance spectroscopic images. Images are captured synchronously in four polarization configurations (0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°). Here we demonstrated the potential utility of this PMSI system for in vivo skin assessment of melanoma, melanocytic nevi, and keratinocyte carcinomas.
