Building mission-led science communication and engagement capability in Aotearoa New Zealand: lessons from the

Abstract:
Mission-led research must be relevant, accessible and applicable to deliver realistic solutions to 'real-world' problems and questions. This can only be achieved through clear and effective communication of the sciences to engaged audiences, empowering people to respond to science with meaningful action. The Aotearoa New Zealand National Science Challenges enabled mission-led science communication and engagement (MLSCE) capabilities to grow. We highlight seven lessons learned by the National Science Challenges in using science communications and engagement to take the 'extra steps' in supporting the transition of science to outcomes, then impact, previously considered optional in the science, technology and innovation system. Lessons include that science communication and engagement go hand-in-hand and should be included in contracted deliverables, embedded over the life of a programme and informed by communities where appropriate. Building capability in this area is critical to amplify research impact and identify new opportunities. Finally, mission-led communications and engagement may be difficult if owned only by institutional communications teams. These lessons will allow science to better contribute to real-world outcomes, if resourced by future funding entities and implemented by research programmes.
