Abstract:
This research investigates the eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) utilizing the aqueous extract of Morus spp. (Mulberry) fruit as a natural bio-reducing and stabilizing agent. The mulberry fruit-mediated silver nanoparticles (MF-AgNPs) were primarily spherical, with particle sizes between 20 and 100 nm, as verified by electron microscopy and particle size characterization respectively. To assess their biological potential, MF-AgNPs were utilized in sericulture by treating MR2 mulberry leaves, a favored diet for Bombyx mori, with different concentrations (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%). Fifth instar silkworm larvae were administered these treated leaves thrice daily, whereas a control group was given leaves treated with distilled water. The 40% MF-AgNP treatment exhibited the most significant beneficial effects on larval growth and economic traits among the evaluated concentrations. This encompassed enhanced larval body weight, enhanced cocoon weight, and elevated shell ratio, signifying improved silk productivity as well as improved physiological performance relative to control and other treatment groups. The research underscores the promise of MF-AgNPs as a biocompatible and efficacious additive in silkworm farming.
