Self-evaluation, actual performance and preference across the life-span.

    Summary

Individuals often misjudge their performance accuracy, regardless of age. Task preference strongly correlates with perceived performance, not actual results, in this study of 175 females.

    Area of Science:

    • Cognitive Psychology
    • Human Performance Studies
    • Gerontology

    Background:

    • Self-evaluation accuracy is crucial for learning and adaptation.
    • Understanding age-related differences in self-perception is important.
    • The link between perceived performance and task preference requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the relationship between self-evaluation and actual performance across different age groups.
    • To investigate the connection between self-evaluation and task preference.
    • To determine if age influences self-assessment accuracy and preference.

    Main Methods:

    • 175 females aged 17–72 participated.
    • A complex reaction time task was administered.
    • Self-performance evaluation and task preference were measured using the Semantic Differential Technique.

    Main Results:

    • Participants across all age groups demonstrated inaccuracies in evaluating their performance.
    • A significant positive correlation was found between rated task preference and perceived performance.
    • Age did not appear to significantly alter the inaccuracy of self-performance evaluation.

    Conclusions:

    • Self-performance evaluation is generally unreliable across the adult lifespan.
    • Task preference is primarily driven by subjective feelings of performance rather than objective accuracy.
    • Findings have implications for feedback mechanisms and self-perception in various performance contexts.
