Background:

  • Acromegaly, a condition caused by excess growth hormone, can lead to various complications.
  • Balance impairment is an underrecognized but potentially serious consequence of acromegaly.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess and compare the balance capabilities of patients with long-term acromegaly to those of non-acromegalic controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 17 patients with acromegaly and 17 matched controls.
  • Balance was assessed using a force platform (measuring Centre of Pressure area and velocity), the timed up-and-go (TUG) test, and questionnaires.
  • Neurological, visual, and musculoskeletal functions were also evaluated.

Main Results:

  • Patients with acromegaly exhibited significantly increased Centre of Pressure area, indicating poorer static balance, even after adjusting for neural and visual factors.
  • Dynamic balance was also impaired during cognitive tasks, and the TUG test results were significantly worse in the acromegaly group.
  • Impaired balance correlated with self-reported joint pain in acromegaly patients.

Conclusions:

  • Long-term acromegaly, even when controlled, is associated with significant impairments in both static and dynamic balance.
  • These findings underscore the importance of clinical evaluation for balance deficits in acromegaly patients.
  • Further research is necessary to develop effective therapeutic strategies for this overlooked complication.
