    Summary

Fungal granulomas caused by Paecilomyces fungi led to laryngeal occlusion and asphyxiation in a Rhesus monkey. This case highlights the potential for subcutaneous and laryngeal fungal infections to cause fatal respiratory obstruction.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Mycology
    • Primate Medicine

    Background:

    • Fungal infections can cause granulomatous inflammation in various animal species.
    • Paecilomyces species are known opportunistic fungal pathogens.

    Observation:

    • A Rhesus monkey presented with focal granulomas at subcutaneous and laryngeal sites.
    • Mild wheezing was observed for eight months prior to the animal's death.

    Findings:

    • The monkey's death was attributed to asphyxiation.
    • A fungal granuloma caused complete occlusion of the larynx.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of considering fungal infections in the differential diagnosis of respiratory distress in non-human primates.
    • Subcutaneous and laryngeal Paecilomyces infections can have severe, life-threatening consequences.
