Medical students face significant mental health challenges. Creating health-promoting learning environments (HPLEs) requires systemic changes, focusing on respect, basic needs, and leadership to foster wellbeing in medical education.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Student Wellbeing
- Health Promotion
Background:
- Canadian medical students report higher rates of suicidal ideation, stress, and mood/anxiety disorders compared to the general population.
- A comprehensive approach to learner wellbeing, centered on health-promoting learning environments (HPLEs) and guided by the Okanagan Charter, is still developing.
- Understanding learner, faculty, and staff perspectives on HPLE components is crucial for advancing medical education.
Purpose of the Study:
- To define health-promoting learning environments (HPLEs) from the perspective of medical students.
- To identify perceived barriers and facilitators in developing and fostering HPLEs within medical education.
Main Methods:
- An exploratory qualitative study was conducted using virtual semi-structured interviews.
- Thematic analysis was applied to interview transcripts with ongoing iterative analysis.
- Final themes were established through consensus.
Main Results:
- Four overarching themes emerged regarding HPLE components: respect, transparency, and open communication are foundational.
- Developing HPLEs necessitates multi-pronged strategies, including meeting basic needs and empowering health-promoting choices.
- A culture of wellbeing is driven by leadership, and safe spaces for learner involvement are vital for thriving.
Conclusions:
- This study elucidated medical student perspectives on factors contributing to and fostering health-promoting learning environments.
- Findings can inform systemic initiatives to integrate wellbeing into Canadian medical education.
