Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Prosthodontics
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Edentulism affects a significant patient population, necessitating effective prosthetic rehabilitation.
  • Mini Dental Implants (MDIs) offer a less invasive and more cost-effective alternative to conventional implants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the survival rates of Mini Dental Implants (MDIs) and their associated overdenture prostheses in edentulous patients.
  • To assess implant survival, prosthetic survival, marginal bone loss (MBL), and complications over short-, medium-, and long-term follow-ups.

Main Methods:

  • A study included patients rehabilitated with MDIs (diameter ≤ 2.9 mm) supporting overdentures, with a minimum 3-year follow-up.
  • Data collected included implant and prosthetic failure rates, complications, and MBL.
  • 83 patients and 334 implants were analyzed over a mean follow-up of 8.09 years.

Main Results:

  • The cumulative implant survival rate reached 86.3% at 15 years, with a prosthetic survival rate of 95.45%.
  • Mean MBL increased to 1.79 mm at 15 years, with Lodi Biomax implants showing significantly less bone loss than Dentatus Atlas implants.
  • Longer follow-up and fewer prosthetic adjustments were associated with reduced complication risks; Lodi Biomax implants had fewer complications.

Conclusions:

  • MDIs (2.4-3 mm diameter) exhibit high survival rates up to 15 years, providing a viable prosthetic solution for edentulous patients.
  • MDIs minimize surgical invasiveness, reduce rehabilitation time, and lower costs.
  • They are particularly suitable when fixed prostheses are not feasible or desired by the patient.
