Geriatric acetabular fractures can be successfully treated with a modified Stoppa approach and suprapectineal plating. An accelerated rehabilitation protocol allows elderly patients to bear full weight by six weeks post-surgery.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Geriatric Trauma
- Fracture Management
Background:
- Geriatric acetabular fractures from low-energy trauma are an increasing orthopedic challenge.
- Osteoporotic bone complicates fracture fixation and rehabilitation in elderly patients.
Observation:
- A 63-year-old male with a complex, comminuted acetabular fracture (osteoporotic, medial dome impaction, quadrilateral plate involvement) was treated.
- The fracture was surgically repaired using a modified Stoppa approach with suprapectineal plating.
Findings:
- Anatomical reduction and stable fixation were achieved using the modified Stoppa approach.
- An accelerated rehabilitation protocol enabled full weight-bearing by six weeks post-operation with radiographic union.
Implications:
- This approach offers a viable strategy for managing complex geriatric acetabular fractures.
- Early weight-bearing is feasible and safe, improving outcomes for elderly trauma patients.
- The findings support accelerated mobilization in geriatric fracture care.

Fractures: Bone Repair
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...
