Nursing Faculty Report Being Underprepared to Address Teaching Challenges

Despite decades of recommendations for nursing education reform, little is known about the preparation and confidence of nurse educators in addressing teaching challenges (eg, social justice, incivility, knowledge, cheating, student preparedness, etc).

This article reports on the quantitative results of the Critical Incident Video Preparation and Confidence Scale (CIVPCS © ) addressing teaching challenges within 4 teaching environments.

Nurse educators (N = 257) from prelicensure accredited RN programs across the US were recruited and completed the CIVPCS © .

Depending on the teaching environment, 25%-53% of participants reported being unprepared and not confident to address various teaching challenges.

This national study raises significant concerns about the discipline's preparation of nurse educators to address teaching challenges. Immediate steps should be taken to improve the preparation and confidence of nurse educators to deal with the complexities of the 21 st century academic role.
