This review identified two Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) language assessment protocols, VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R, used in speech therapy. Neither protocol has validation studies in Brazilian Portuguese.
Area of Science:
- Speech-Language Pathology
- Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
- Language Assessment
Background:
- Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles are increasingly integrated into speech-language therapy.
- Identifying effective ABA-based language assessment protocols is crucial for clinical practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and describe language assessment protocols derived from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) utilized in speech-language therapy.
Main Methods:
- A systematic electronic search was conducted across Medline/PubMed, Lilacs, Web of Science, and Scopus databases.
- Studies focusing on ABA-based language assessment protocols in speech therapy were included; review articles and non-assessment-focused studies were excluded.
- Descriptive analysis was employed, examining the levels of evidence for the selected studies.
Main Results:
- The search initially identified 6,859 articles, with 17 selected after title and abstract review.
- Following exclusion criteria, five articles proceeded to full-text analysis.
- Only two ABA-based language assessment protocols, VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R, were identified.
Conclusions:
- The review found two primary ABA-based language assessment protocols: VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R.
- A significant limitation is the absence of validation studies for these protocols in Brazilian Portuguese.
