    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Conservative Dentistry
    • Esthetic Dentistry

    Background:

    • Resin infiltration effectively treats white spot lesions (WSLs).
    • Incomplete resin infiltration can leave porosity in WSLs, impacting esthetics.
    • Inactive WSLs present a challenge for achieving optimal esthetic outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and describe a modified microabrasion protocol for enamel surface treatment before resin infiltration.
    • To evaluate the esthetic improvement of teeth with inactive WSLs using this modified protocol.
    • To present a less invasive alternative to conventional restorative techniques for WSLs.

    Main Methods:

    • A step-by-step clinical protocol based on scientific literature is described.
    • The protocol involves modifying the enamel surface using microabrasion prior to resin infiltration.
    • Two case reports of patients with inactive WSLs are presented.

    Main Results:

    • The modified microabrasion protocol shows promising potential for treating deep inactive WSLs.
    • Improved esthetics were achieved in patients treated with the modified protocol.
    • The approach resulted in satisfactory esthetic outcomes with a less invasive method.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified microabrasion protocol enhances the esthetic outcome of resin infiltration for inactive WSLs.
    • This technique offers a minimally invasive option for improving dental appearance.
    • Further in vitro and clinical studies are required to validate effectiveness and analyze surface loss.
