Academic oral and maxillofacial surgery careers remain under constant threat due to the challenges, which are primarily financial in nature, associated with faculty recruitment and retention. Extramural private practice combined with academics is a potent antidote in resolving this challenge. This model benefits both the surgeon and the institution by increasing surgeon income, reducing institutional cost, and dramatically improving department revenue. Given the large disparities between private practice and academic practice income combined with the massive increase in resident educational loan indebtedness, this model has the widest appeal to young surgeons wanting an academic career.
