Abstract:
Emergency physicians are often required to make complex decisions regarding the limitation of treatment intensity in acute care settings. This article explores the legal and ethical foundations that guide such decisions in Switzerland, along with the medical considerations necessary for shared decision making regarding the level of care intensity. It emphasizes the importance of comprehensive patient assessment, early identification of end-of-life situations, and careful communication with patients and their families. The goal is to ensure care is fair, respectful and tailored to individual situations.
