Abstract:
Retrieval algorithms for satellite-observed nitrogen dioxide (NO2) introduce large-scale uncertainties, and upgrades of these retrievals demand a rigorous quantification of the changes across heterogeneous geographies. This study establishes that TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) version 2.4 significantly enhances NO2 monitoring capabilities through comprehensive validation against Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and 1,707 surface sites in China. The upgraded Directional Lambertian Equivalent Reflectivity (DLER) climatology (0.125° resolution) and v2.1 radiance spectra drive a systematic 9 % mean increase in tropospheric columns in comparison to version 2.2, with spatially heterogeneous differences: increments of 16-30 % are found over megacities with high emissions, and, in contrast, 3-9 % enhancements are found in rural zones. The densely vegetated eastern region of China shows a high increase of up to 30 % due to optimized bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction for anisotropic scattering. Crucially, v2.4 achieves superior validation fidelity-reducing differences relative to OMI by 16 % and correlating with ground measurements at Pearson's R = 0.65 (p < 0.001)-rectifying 15-40 % underestimations in vegetation-dominated areas. These advances demonstrate transferable value across global monsoon-vegetation ecosystems where similar systematic differences prevail, providing calibrated emission factors essential for air quality management and establishing a robust framework for evaluating satellite retrieval upgrades in transitional climate zones.
