Reconstruction of Extensive Full-Thickness Thoracic Defect Due to Giant Pleomorphic Rhabdomyosarcoma

Abstract:
We report a successful multivisceral resection of the thorax in a rare giant necrotic sarcoma, which was subsequently repaired in a single stage. The defect was large and full-thickness. A superelastic NiTi(Ag)-based alloy wire with antibacterial properties was employed to reconstruct the thoracic cage using a meander-loops device. There were no serious complications, side effects, or tissue depressions observed. We note favourable clinical outcomes during a 1-year follow-up. The patient is self-sufficient and autonomous. The Nitinol device provides flexibility and versatility in oncosurgical procedures when a surgeon cannot accurately assess the size of forthcoming excisions and implants required for defect reconstruction.
