Veins of the Abdomen and Pelvis01:18

Veins of the Abdomen and Pelvis

The human body is a complex system of interconnected parts, and the circulatory system plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. One key component of this system is the inferior vena cava, a large vein responsible for returning blood from the abdominopelvic viscera and abdominal walls to the heart.
The inferior vena cava is fed by numerous smaller veins. The lumbar veins, for instance, drain the posterior abdominal wall, emptying both directly into the inferior vena cava and into the...

    Summary

The Waistline Aesthetic Slimming by Puncture (WASP) technique safely and effectively reduces waist diameter and waist-to-hip ratio. This minimally invasive body contouring procedure significantly enhances the hourglass silhouette with high patient satisfaction.

    Area of Science:

    • Plastic Surgery
    • Aesthetic Medicine
    • Body Contouring

    Background:

    • Traditional body contouring methods offer limited waist definition due to soft tissue focus.
    • Rib remodeling surgery presents a safer, minimally invasive alternative to aggressive techniques like rib resection for waistline aesthetics.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Introduce the Waistline Aesthetic Slimming by Puncture (WASP) technique for body contouring.
    • Evaluate WASP's efficacy in enhancing the hourglass silhouette and reducing waist diameter.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective cohort study across 3 institutions in Colombia and Brazil (July 2023 - August 2024).
    • Inclusion: Patients undergoing WASP; Exclusion: BMI >30, prior rib surgery, respiratory/spinal conditions.
    • Assessed patient satisfaction using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale 3-6 months post-procedure.

    Main Results:

    • 125 patients (96.8% female, mean age 34.7 years, mean BMI 24.1 kg/m²) underwent WASP.
    • Significant reduction in median waist circumference from 76 cm to 65 cm at 3 months post-procedure.
    • Waist-to-hip ratio decreased from 0.8 to 0.7; complication rate was low (3.8%) with high satisfaction (92.9%).

    Conclusions:

    • The WASP technique is a safe and reproducible method for body contouring.
    • WASP effectively reduces waist measurements and waist-to-hip ratio, improving aesthetic outcomes.
    • The procedure offers a valuable option for enhancing the waistline definition.
