The Effect of Hypericum Perforatum on Wound Healing in Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Purpose:
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgeries in the world. The most important problem after aesthetic surgeries is scar formation. To investigate the effectiveness of Hypericum perforatum extract prepared with the traditional method on postoperative wound healing and scar appearance in patients who underwent upper eyelid blepharoplasty.
Methods:
Patients who underwent blepharoplasty between January 2020 and January 2025 were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (n=30, Hypericum perforatum extract applied), Group 2 (n=30, Hypericum perforatum extract not applied). All evaluations were evaluated by a single ophthalmologist at postoperative 2nd weeks, 1st month and 2nd months. At each follow-up, cases were evaluated using the REEDA wound healing (redness, edema, ecchymosis, discharge and approximation) and Vancouver scar (vascularity, pigmentation, pliability, and height) scale.
Results:
In our study, a total of 60 cases were examined, 30 in group 1 and 30 in group 2. 42 (70%) of the cases were female and 18 (30%) were male. The mean age was 43.2 ± 2.6 (25-75) years. The changes in two scales at postoperative 2nd week, 1st month and 2nd month in group 1 and group 2 were statistically significant (p<0.05). The difference between group 1 and group 2 at postoperative 2nd week and 1st month in REEDA scale was statistically significant (p<0.05). The difference between group 1 and group 2 at postoperative 2nd month was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Vancouver scale was 6.1 ± 2.2(3-13) in group 1 and 7.8 ± 3.1(4-13) in group 2 at postoperative 2nd week and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups at postoperative 1st and 2nd months (p>0.05).
Conclusion:
Topical Hypericum perforatum extract had a positive effect on wound healing after blepharoplasty and did not have a significant effect on scar development in the long term.
