Summary

Women who experienced pre-eclampsia have a higher prevalence of atherosclerosis, appearing approximately 10 years earlier than in women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Early cardiovascular risk management is crucial for this population.

  • To compare atherosclerosis rates between women with and without a history of pre-eclampsia.
  • To analyze the impact of advancing maternal age on these rates.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature review and meta-analysis of 11 studies (13,217 participants).
  • Included studies documented systemic atherosclerosis via ultrasound or CT scans.
  • Random-effects meta-analysis calculated odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Main Results:

  • A pooled OR of 1.57 (95% CI, 1.39-1.78) for atherosclerosis post-pre-eclampsia.
  • Atherosclerosis risk increased with maternal age, significantly higher in the 40-49 (OR, 1.59) and 50-60 (OR, 2.00) age groups.
  • Prevalence in formerly pre-eclamptic women was similar to non-pre-eclamptic women 10 years their senior.

Conclusions:

  • Women with a history of pre-eclampsia exhibit more frequent atherosclerosis, appearing about a decade earlier.
  • Targeted primary prevention strategies are necessary.
  • This aims to reduce premature cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality.
