Nursing Interventions II: Selecting and Classifying the Nursing Interventions

Creating and executing a nursing diagnosis helps nurses plan care and guide patient, family, and community interventions. They are developed based on a patient's physical evaluation and support measuring the outcomes. It is not recommended to select random interventions throughout the planning process. Instead, consider the following six essential factors when choosing interventions:

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Summary

The Get to Know Me board improved empathy perceptions for families in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). While it aids understanding, a supportive family-centered care environment remains crucial for NICU patient and family well-being.

Background:

Existing research on the Get to Know Me board is primarily limited to adult inpatient settings.
The effectiveness of this patient- and family-centered care intervention in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of a NICU-specific Get to Know Me board on nurse and family perceptions.
To assess changes in perceived empathy, trust, and satisfaction among families and nurses.
To explore the influence of the board on nurse engagement in caring behaviors.

Main Methods:

A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 70 families and 39 nurses in 5 NICU single-patient room clusters.
Clusters were randomized to either standard communication tools or the addition of the Get to Know Me board.
Validated quantitative measures and qualitative interviews were used to collect data on perceptions and experiences.

Main Results:

Family members reported significantly improved perceptions of empathy after 2 weeks (P = .05).
Nurses' perceptions of engagement in caring behaviors remained unchanged (P = .40).
Qualitative data suggested the board facilitates mutual understanding but is one component of a broader family-centered care approach.

Conclusions:

The Get to Know Me board shows potential for enhancing family-centered care within the NICU setting.
A robust family-centered care environment appears to be a critical factor for optimizing patient and family experiences.
Further research is recommended to fully ascertain the value of the NICU-specific Get to Know Me board.
