New daily persistent headache in children may improve with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation. Regular exercise and other treatments like magnesium also showed potential benefits in resolving this chronic headache disorder.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Pediatric Headache Disorders
Background:
- New daily persistent headache (NDPH) is a chronic, treatment-resistant primary headache disorder.
- Limited guidance exists for effective NDPH management, impacting quality of life.
- Few studies have identified targeted therapies for NDPH symptom resolution.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe outcomes in pediatric patients diagnosed with NDPH.
- To assess associations between specific interventions and headache resolution in pediatric NDPH.
- To identify potential therapeutic targets for NDPH.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of a patient registry at Children's National Hospital.
- Inclusion of pediatric patients diagnosed with NDPH.
- Analysis of demographic characteristics, clinical features, prior treatments, and resolution rates.
- Statistical comparisons between resolved and non-resolved headache groups.
Main Results:
- 182 pediatric patients were included (mean age 15.5 years; 78% female).
- Headache resolution occurred in 47 patients (25.8%).
- Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation was significantly associated with headache resolution (17% vs 4%, P=.010).
- Magnesium, topiramate, and onabotulinum toxin A injections showed trends toward significance.
- Regular exercise was associated with a trend toward higher resolution rates (P=.058).
Conclusions:
- Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation may play a role in pediatric NDPH resolution.
- Exercise, magnesium, topiramate, and onabotulinum toxin A injections may offer potential benefits.
- Further prospective studies and randomized controlled trials are needed to establish causality and optimize NDPH treatment strategies.
