Bullying

8.5K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

211
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Aggression01:47

Aggression

28.0K
Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for...

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Criminology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Verbal violence by stalkers has severe mental health impacts on victims.
  • Little research has explored the correlates of stalkers' verbal violence.
  • Police data can identify factors associated with verbal violence for intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between men's psychological distress or substance use and verbal violence.
  • To examine these associations in the context of intimate partner stalking.
  • To utilize police-identified factors for understanding perpetration.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of anonymised police records from 603 men in Western Australia linked to stalking offenses.
  • Logistic regression models to assess the relationship between police-identified psychological distress, drug use, and verbal violence.
  • Differentiated analysis of verbal violence expressions: 'death/injury/sexual assault threats' versus 'other verbal violence'.

Main Results:

  • Police-identified psychological distress (OR = 2.3-3.1) and drug use (OR = 2.1-2.2) were independently linked to verbal violence.
  • The association varied based on the type of verbal violence expressed.
  • Threats of death/injury/sexual assault explained more variance than other verbal violence.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first study to examine correlates of intimate partner stalkers' verbal violence using police data.
  • Psychological distress, drug use, and physical violence are differentially associated with types of verbal violence.
  • Considering distinct types of verbal violence is crucial for research and intervention.
