Purulent intervertebral osteochondritis is a rare complication following spinal surgery or discography. Early diagnosis is challenging due to subtle initial symptoms, but treatment can lead to recovery with spinal fusion.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Spinal Surgery

    Background:

    • Osteochondrosis of the vertebral column and discography are common spinal procedures.
    • Infection is a potential complication of invasive spinal interventions.
    • Early identification of post-procedural infections is critical for patient outcomes.

    Observation:

    • Purulent intervertebral osteochondritis was identified in 2 of 107 patients post-osteochondrosis surgery.
    • One patient out of 98 developed this complication after discography.
    • Initial clinical signs of this complication were not pathognomonic, complicating early diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • The study highlights the diagnostic challenges of purulent intervertebral osteochondritis in its early stages.
    • Prompt surgical intervention, including drainage, was performed on affected patients.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Successful recovery was observed in two patients within 3-5 months, resulting in complete ankylosis.
  • Implications:

    • This condition requires heightened clinical suspicion, especially in patients with subtle post-operative symptoms.
    • Effective management involves timely surgical drainage to control infection.
    • Complete ankylosis as an outcome suggests the potential for long-term spinal stability post-infection resolution.
