Transgenerational pathogen effects: Maternal pathogen exposure reduces offspring fitness

Parental infection by the microsporidian Ordospora pajunii did not prime offspring immunity but caused negative transgenerational effects. Offspring of infected mothers experienced increased mortality and reduced reproduction, a phenomenon termed transgenerational virulence.
