Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)

844
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) serves as the primary classification system for mental health disorders, providing standardized diagnostic criteria for clinicians and researchers. First published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, the DSM has undergone several revisions to reflect evolving psychiatric understanding. The fifth edition, DSM-5, released in 2013, introduced key updates that expanded diagnostic categories and modified diagnostic...

Drug Dependence01:17

Drug Dependence

1.5K
Medications are typically administered to achieve therapeutic effects. Some drugs can modify an individual's mood and perception, frequently resulting in various enjoyable experiences. However, this can result in drug dependency, a condition marked by continuous drug use despite potential negative consequences. Drug dependency primarily falls into two categories: psychological and physical dependence. Psychological dependence occurs when the pleasurable feelings induced by the drug...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Drug Abuse and Addiction: Pharmacological Phenomena

1.1K
Drug dependence, abuse, and addiction are complex phenomena that can precipitate various abnormal states. Physical dependence refers to a state of pharmacological adaptation to a drug. This adaptation often results in tolerance—a reduced response to the drug after repeated administrations. When the drug use is abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms occur due to the body's need to readjust from the pharmacologically induced imbalance. However, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms do not...

Bias01:22

Bias

7.2K
Bias refers to any tendency that prevents a question from being considered unprejudiced. In research, bias occurs when one outcome or answer is selected or encouraged over others in sampling or testing. Bias can occur during any research phase, including study design, data collection, analysis, and publication.
In statistics, a sampling bias is created when a sample is collected from a population, and some members of the population are not as likely to be chosen as others (remember, each member...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

43.4K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Area of Science:

  • Health Communication
  • Digital Health Literacy

Background:

  • Online platforms are primary sources for health information.
  • Assessing the quality of online health information is crucial for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the readability and reliability of Turkish-language websites on gambling.
  • To identify deficiencies in online gambling health information.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed 65 Turkish websites using the Ateşman Readability Index and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark.
  • Analyzed content for readability (sentence/word length) and reliability (authorship, attribution, disclosure, currency).

Main Results:

  • Websites had a low Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) score (1.23 ± 0.93), with 64.6% rated as having low reliability.
  • Average Ateşman score indicated an 11th-12th grade reading level (moderately difficult).
  • Despite 81.5% originating from health organizations, both readability and reliability were inadequate.

Conclusions:

  • Online gambling information is often not easily understood or trustworthy.
  • There is a significant need for more accessible and reliable digital resources on gambling addiction.
  • Collaboration is recommended to enhance the quality of online health information.
