Background:

  • Environmental navigation is vital for independence but is impaired in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
  • The influence of mobility deficits and perceived constraints on navigation and spatial memory in MS is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between clinical mobility measures, fear of falling, and environmental detail recall in individuals with MS.
  • To identify key predictors of wayfinding and spatial memory performance in a relapsing-remitting MS sample.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-four individuals with relapsing-remitting MS completed a virtual Morris Water Maze (vMWM) task.
  • Subsequent free recall of virtual environment details was assessed.
  • Multiple regression analysis incorporated disease severity, gait, balance, and fear of falling as predictors.

  • Mobility function, specifically balance, and concern about falling significantly predicted recall of environmental details.
  • These factors accounted for 25.0% of the variance in environmental detail recall.
