Energy Balance01:19

Energy Balance

1.2K
The human body gets energy from the three macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Energy is released when the chemical bonds in the organic compounds present in the food are broken down. The energy content of food is measured in kilocalories (kcal), defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. This value is determined by measuring the temperature change of the water surrounding a calorimeter after the complete...

Chronic Kidney Disease III: Interprofessional Care

346
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires collaborative and comprehensive management. CKD progresses through stages and can lead to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) if untreated. Interprofessional collaboration and patient education are crucial, enabling patients to manage their health and improve their quality of life.Diagnostic approach for chronic kidney diseaseThe diagnosis of CKD primarily focuses on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which assesses kidney function by measuring how well...

Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

2.3K
Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Optimal Foraging00:48

Optimal Foraging

13.6K
How animals obtain and eat their food is called foraging behavior. Foraging can include searching for plants and hunting for prey and depends on the species and environment.

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

456
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Drug Dosing in Renal Diseases: Estimation of Glomerular Filtration Rate Based on Serum Creatinine Concentration01:28

Drug Dosing in Renal Diseases: Estimation of Glomerular Filtration Rate Based on Serum Creatinine Concentration

191
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can be estimated from serum creatinine using the modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD) formula or the chronic kidney disease–epidemiology collaboration (CKD–EPI) equation. Both methods are widely used in clinical practice to assess kidney function and guide treatment decisions. The MDRD equation does not require weight or height measurements and is normalized to the body surface area of 1.73 m², considered the average adult surface area.

Summary

The UK's Eatwell Guide, established in 1995 and revised in 2016, provides food-based dietary guidelines. While improved with optimization modeling, this review suggests the guide needs further revision for better health recommendations.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Public Health Policy

Background:

  • The UK's national food guide, the Eatwell Guide, was first issued in 1995 and last revised in 2016.
  • The guide uses a pie chart to represent ideal dietary proportions across food groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the aims, history, strengths, and weaknesses of the Eatwell Guide.
  • To propose improvements for the future revision of the Eatwell Guide.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of UK food-based dietary guidelines.
  • Analysis of the Eatwell Guide's structure and scientific basis.
  • Identification of areas for enhancement in dietary recommendations.

Main Results:

  • The core structure and food groups of the Eatwell Guide have remained largely unchanged since 1995.
  • The 2016 revision introduced optimization modeling for segment proportions, enhancing its scientific foundation.
  • Significant limitations and areas for improvement in the current guide have been identified.

Conclusions:

  • The Eatwell Guide requires further revision to better reflect current nutritional science and public health goals.
  • Enhancements could include updated food group classifications and refined proportion recommendations.
  • A revised guide is necessary to provide more effective dietary advice for the UK population.
